During 2008-09, a group of friends in Auburn known as the “Hungry Tigers” published a cookbook entitled Auburn Celebrates Life with Family and Friends, to raise money for ovarian cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
One of the group’s members, Grace Jones, was an ovarian cancer survivor who was undergoing treatment at the time. The Hungry Tigers came up with the idea of creating a cookbook over a group breakfast one morning. After Ms. Jones explained the statistics of ovarian cancer and shared the need for more research dollars to fund an accurate test and cure, the group embraced the idea and began pulling together recipes from the community.
The cookbook raised more than $15,000 for ovarian cancer research. The Hungry Tigers chose the Cancer Center to receive these funds because 100% of the money would go directly toward research.
