IN JULY, Albert LoBuglio, M.D., UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center director emeri- tus, was named to the 2012 class of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame. Dr. LoBuglio was direc- tor of the Cancer Center from 1982 until 2004, at the time one of the longest tenures of any cancer

center director in the nation. Dr. LoBuglio has remained a faculty member, concentrating on his various research efforts. As director, he led the Cancer Center through an unprecedented period of growth by recruiting new facul- ty, increasing extramural funding nearly tenfold and cementing the center s reputation as a national leader in the field of translational research.

Celebrating Life Heads to the Ballpark ACIPCO Makes Donation

BCRFA Hosts Annual Casino Night and Golf Tournament

BIRMINGHAM S ACIPCO (American Cast Iron Pipe Company) made its 33rd annual donation to support research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. This most recent donation of $20,000, which will go toward the Cancer Center s Fund for Excellence, brings ACIPCO s lifetime donation total to more than $540,000.

IN MAY, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) held its annual Pink Palace Casino Night and Drive-Out Breast Cancer LPGA Pro-Am Golf Tournament. The casino night was themed Pink Palace Goes to the Big Apple and brought several of New York s most famous neighborhoods, including Little Italy and Chinatown, to Ted s Garage in downtown Birmingham. Combined, the casino night and the golf tournament raised more than $270,000 for breast cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
