IN THIS ISSUE of UAB Comprehensive Cancer

Center magazine, we take a look at our recent

grant from the Centers for Medicare and

Medicaid Services. This three-year, $15-million

grant is being used to create the Deep South

Cancer Navigation Network, which we hope will

become a national model in decreasing the cost

of cancer care.

The cost of health care is a hot topic in the

news and for good reason. No matter what

form health-care reform takes, we as health-

care providers must find ways to reduce our

costs while still delivering the best and most

effective treatments. Because of our status as a

national leader in the research and treatment of

cancer, we have an obligation to find ways to do

just that.

Also in this issue, we highlight our new patient

guide, which is the result of years of hard work

by our nurses and patient education staff. This

handbook provides a comprehensive overview

of everything that a cancer patient at UAB needs

to know, from the initial diagnosis to the issues

surrounding life after cancer.

Lastly, we spotlight two of our biggest fun-

draising events: the ArtBLINKĀ® Gala and the

Fiesta Ball. Together these two events raised

more than $1 million for our various research

efforts and patient and family service activities

at the Cancer Center. This community support

is critical to our mission and allows us to jump-

start the scientific research that will lead to new

drugs and therapies for cancer patients.

We could not do the work that we do

without that support, and I thank each and

every one of you for supporting your UAB

Comprehensive Cancer Center.
