A strange thing

happened. . .

I fell in love with

medicine.

I actually never wanted to be a doctor, says Harry Erba, M.D., Ph.D. My mother wanted me to be a doctor. That s how Dr. Erba begins describing the path that led him from his native Connecticut to California to Michigan and eventually here to Alabama and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Born and raised in New Haven, he received his bachelor s degree

in biology from Yale University. It was there that he became interested in developmental biology how a fertilized egg develops into a multicellular organism, and along those same lines, what changes occur within a cell to make it become cancerous.

After graduating, Dr. Erba went to England for a year for a research fellowship where he studied gene expression in the chromosomes of a newt ovary.
