Hardy Receives President s Award

The Offices of the Vice President for Equity and Diversity and the Vice Provost for Student and Faculty Success recently announced winners for the 2014 President s Diversity Awards.

Claudia Hardy, program director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center s Deep South Network of Cancer Control, was one of just six recipients. Ms. Hardy was selected for the award for her work in advancing the academic mission of UAB by training both minority and nonmi-

nority faculty and by facilitating their engage- ment with minority residents of the Deep South.

This annual award honors the significant achievements of full-time faculty, staff and students toward developing a more culturally diverse, competent and inclusive university com- munity. Awards are given in each of five catego- ries for projects or activities that best reflect the implementation of unit and/or campus diversity goals.

New Light Hosts Support Group

THE NEW LIGHT SUPPORT GROUP held its most recent meeting on March 9 at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. More than 200 people 71 of whom were breast cancer survivors attended the meeting, which was themed a Fashion Show of Hope.

New Light is led by UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center senior sci- entist Andres Forero, M.D., and funded by a community grant from the Susan G. Komen North-Central Alabama Affiliate with additional support from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. Originally begun for triple negative breast cancer sur- vivors, the group has expanded to include all breast cancer survivors and attracts patients from hospitals outside UAB.

The purpose of this support group is to provide up-to-date medical information as it relates to oncology care and treatments. The group also serves as a support mechanism which helps patients find their strengths, and it offers support to survivors who might be dealing with similar obstacles along the treatment journey.

New Light s meetings are held quarterly. For

more information, please contact Kym Robinson at (205) 975-7912 or Carolyn
