8 IN THIS ISSUE of UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center magazine, we introduce you to an exciting and growing area of research here at

UAB the microbiome, which is the term used

to describe the community of bacteria that

live on and inside our bodies. This issue s cover

story will give you an overview of the micro-

biome and explain how it impacts both the

prevention and treatment of cancer.

This issue will also introduce you to two

rising stars here at the UAB Comprehensive

Cancer Center: Harry Erba, M.D., Ph.D.,

and Christine Skibola, Ph.D. Dr. Erba is our

Associate Director for Clinical Research, and

Dr. Skibola serves as a co-leader of our Cancer

Control and Population Sciences research pro-

gram. Both of these brilliant scientists joined

our faculty in the past few years, and both

have made an immediate impact on the cancer

enterprise at UAB.

We also highlight those individuals who

are making a difference by giving back to

the Cancer Center. Our Advisory Board s

annual ArtBLINK Gala, held in February, was

another resounding success. And in March,

I was extremely proud to accept a check

for $500,000 from our friends at the Breast

Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. The

support of these groups is so important in the

fight against cancer, and we could not do the

work that we do without it.

This is also a very special issue of UAB

Comprehensive Cancer Center, as it marks the

magazine s 30th anniversary. What began as a

small, black-and-white newsletter has grown

into an award-winning publication that high-

lights the great work being done here at the

Cancer Center. We hope that you always find

each issue interesting and informative, and we

look forward to sharing our progress with you

here in many issues to come.

As always, thank you for supporting your

UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
