Thompson Family Makes Donation THE UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center recently received a generous donation of $25,000 from the Thompson Family
Foundation of Birmingham. The donation will be used to
fund a breast cancer stem cell research project led by Cancer
Center scientist Susan Ruppert, Ph.D.
The Thompsons have long been loyal supporters of
the Cancer Center as well as the Breast Cancer Research

IN JANUARY, UAB announced a new joint venture with Russell Medical Center in
Alexander City to enhance oncology services
provided in Lake Martin and surrounding
areas. This partnership, UAB Medicine–The
Cancer Center at RMC, is the first relation-
ship of its type for both parties.
The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center
will work closely with RMC’s medical and
radiation oncologists and staff to support and
expand the local treatment program by provid-
ing instruction in UAB Medicine’s best prac-
tices in cancer care, broader access to clinical
trials, continuing medical education for nurses
and oncologists and the latest education about
advancements in the treatment and detection
of cancer.
