IN THIS ISSUE of UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center magazine, we take a closer look at our
work with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. In
particular, we focus on three types that often
do not receive as much attention as others:
liver, pancreatic and esophageal.
It is especially appropriate that we dis-
cuss GI cancers as the UAB Comprehensive
Cancer Center is in the early stages of our
GI Oncology Research and Patient Care
Initiative a $5.5-million fund-raising effort
to bring together the resources needed to
coordinate and enhance our GI programs and
create a nationally prominent research and
patient care enterprise in GI oncology at UAB.
Also in this issue we learn more about the
Cancer Center s Journey to Better Health proj-
ect, an initiative aiming to improve healthy
eating habits and physical activity in minority
populations in Alabama and Mississippi. We ll
also introduce you to our new clinical studies
unit, which is improving access and efficiency
for our clinical trial staff and patients.
Lastly, it is with great sadness that we
at the Cancer Center acknowledge the loss
of two our most respected and dedicated
leaders who passed away in late 2012 John
Durant, M.D., our founding director, and
Seng-jaw Soong, Ph.D., the founder of our
biostatistics and bioinformatics unit. Both of
these men were outstanding physicians and
instrumental in building the Cancer Center
into the world-class institution it is today.
We hope you enjoy this issue. Please know
that we are working every day to make a
difference in the fight against cancer and cre-
ate a world where this disease is no longer a
major public health problem. With your sup-
port, we ll make that vision a reality.
