Martin J. Heslin, M.D.
Associate Director for Clinical Programs
Martin J. Heslin, M.D., is a Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Section for Surgical Oncology at UAB, Associate Chief of Staff at UAB Hospital, and Associate Scientist at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Heslin specializes in the research and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and soft-tissue sarcomas. He is the director of the Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic, which was created to provide all complex gastrointestinal cancer patients with a truly multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of their disease.
In November 2007, Dr. Heslin was named Associate Director for Clinical Programs at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. As such, he is responsible for managing and refining the Cancer Center’s Integrated Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Program (IMCCP), which aims to monitor and coordinate clinical programs to ensure smooth, efficient and patient-centered care for all cancer patients visiting UAB while bringing together multiple specialists into one dynamic treatment team.
Dr. Heslin was recruited to UAB in 1996 from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he completed clinical and research fellowships. He received his B.S. from Cornell University and his M.D. from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He completed his residency at New York University Medical Center.
