research-retreatEvery year the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center hosts its annual Research Retreat and Research Competition, in which UAB faculty and students showcase their scientific work in areas of cancer research. Information on this year’s event is below.

Parking is available in the Sheraton Hotel Parking Deck located on 22nd Street North. The 3rd floor Skywalk connects the parking deck directly to the hotel. Look for Research Retreat signs to direct you to the first floor ballroom in the Sheraton.

Vouchers for free parking will be available at the Retreat registration desk.

This event is free and open to faculty, trainees and staff engaged in cancer research.

Registration is encouraged for all attendees. You must be registered for the meeting in order to submit an abstract for presentation as a poster.

A continental breakfast and buffet lunch are included for registered meeting participants.

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Annual Research Retreat is an opportunity to stimulate interdisciplinary research collaboration and development among cancer researchers. This event is free and open to faculty, trainees and staff engaged in cancer research.



  • Presentations by experts in Immunotherapeutics
  • Annual poster competition and awards
  • Cancer research poster displays (non-competitive)
  • Shared Facility displays



The Comprehensive Cancer Center recognizes junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, resident trainees, and graduate students for their scientific creativity in cancer research, cancer prevention and control research, and cancer biostatistics/bioinformatics research. Eligible participants may submit an abstract of their original cancer research for presentation as a poster to compete for first, second, and third place cash awards. Posters entered in the competition are evaluated and scored by a panel of judges during Poster Sessions on meeting day.  Awards are presented at the end of the meeting.

Open Category (non-competitive). Posters submitted to the Open Category are included in the meeting abstract book. However, Open Category participants do not participate in the competition and are not eligible for an award at this time.



Albert F. LoBuglio Distinguished Faculty Award. This award is presented to the faculty member who has made the most outstanding contribution to the research mission of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.



The Comprehensive Cancer Center Shared Facilities provide state-of-the-art instrumentation and a variety of services to cancer researchers. Our experienced personnel will be available for consultation and to answer questions about usage. Shared Facility exhibits are located adjacent to the Poster displays.
