Gynecologic Cancers

Gynecologic cancer is definied as any cancer that starts in a woman’s reproductive organs. Five main types of cancer affect a woman’s reproductive organs: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. As a group, they are referred to as gynecologic cancer. (A sixth type of gynecologic cancer is the very rare fallopian tube cancer.) Gynecologic cancers affect more than 75,000 women every year.

Gynecologic Cancer Research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is a nationally recognized leader in the field of gynecologic cancer research. The center is currently collaborating with Johns Hopkins University and the University of Colorado-Boulder on a SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant in cervical cancer. These highly prestigious grants are designed to move research findings quickly and safely from the laboratory to the clinical setting. Several of the SPORE’s projects involve the cervical cancer vaccine, which the Cancer Center was highly involved in the development of. The Cancer Center is also active in researching other gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian cancer, in which the center also has held a SPORE grant.
