Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which the malignant cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing enzymes that break down fats and proteins as well as producing insulin for the body. Pancreatic tumors are generally classified into two types: endocrine and exocrine. In 2009, an estimated 42,000 Americans were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The center is one of only four institutions in the nation to hold a SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant in pancreatic cancer.
