The Young Supporters Board of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center presents the opportunity to celebrate Cinco de Mayo for a cause—Fiesta Ball 2013.
Fiesta Ball is a fun-filled Mexican themed event like no other. Guests will enjoy live music, Mexican food, beer and wine – all while supporting the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Alabama's only comprehensive cancer center as designated by the National Cancer Institute.
This year's event will also feature a silent auction filled with a variety of items, from exclusive gift certificates to jewelry to vacation packages. The auction proceeds will be used to support the Young Supporters Board's Patient and Family Services Committee, which provides activities and amenities for cancer patients and their loved ones throughout the year.

Why:
Proceeds from the Young Supporters Board’s Fiesta Ball will be used to fund a competitive grant award for a young cancer researcher at UAB. Candidates for the grant must have no more than two years experience as a full time research scientist/clinician. A scientific review panel, led by Cancer Center Director Dr. Ed Partridge, will review applications and award the grant to the best project proposal.
Scientists who study cancer have to compete for dollars to fund their research, and this competition is becoming increasingly difficult as fewer grants are being awarded on a federal level. This funding crunch is particularly difficult for young scientists just starting their careers, who are competing against well-established researchers. Young scientists who have spent years of their lives being educated with the goal of helping others are struggling to stay in the field of cancer research because there is not enough money to fund their research. We are faced with the threat of losing these talented individuals unless we can find creative ways to fund their initial research.
By funding young scientists, they are able to jumpstart their research and produce results that will help them go on to compete for larger federal grants. Supporting young cancer researchers is an investment in their future and ours. These bright minds will be the ones who will make the breakthrough in discoveries to save the lives of people with cancer -- but only if we support them.
