November 8-14, 2010
Sweet on a Cure is a “sweet”-filled week taking place November 8-14, 2010, at participating restaurants, cafes and bakeries in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. Participating partners designate one sweet from their menu to represent that they are “Sweet on a Cure.” The participating partners direct 100 percent of the proceeds from the sales of the specific dessert to support the research of a young cancer investigator at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
When is Sweet on a Cure? November 8 – 14, 2010
Who can be Sweet? Anyone and any restaurant can be Sweet on a Cure. Fifty-seven restaurants participated in 2009, and we anticipate an increase in participating establishments in 2010.
Why be Sweet on a Cure? Cancer affects everyone, and this is particularly true in Alabama. Our state ranks among the top 10 in cancer deaths, and each year nearly 25,000 Alabamians are diagnosed with the disease. Sweet on a Cure supports cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Alabama’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and one of only 40 in the nation. Funds raised will be used to support the work of a young cancer investigator. In today’s economic climate, federal funding is more difficult to receive than ever, particularly for those scientists who are just beginning their careers. With even established investigators having difficulty obtaining funding, the chances of young researchers receiving substantial grants are even less likely. Sweet on a Cure will support leading-edge research conducted by a young investigator at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
