acceleratingacure-logoThe UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and PBOC Motorsports Club have once again teamed up for Accelerating a Cancer Cure 2011, a driver competition to raise funds for cancer research.

 

Drivers are competing to raise funds for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center from now until the November 19-20 PBOC Points Race at Barber Motorsports Park. The top two Accelerating a Cancer Cure drivers who raise the most money by November 20 will win a free race entry or driver education school form for 2011-12. The driver who secures the most pledges will win two three-day tickets to the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. All drivers registered are eligible to participate.

*Please note that in order for your gift to be credited to a specific driver, you must make your gift "in honor" of that driver by selecting "Honorarium" as the gift type and entering the driver's name in the "Memorial or Honorarium Name" field.

 

If you attend Accelerating a Cancer Cure on Sunday, November 20, you can get in on the action as well! Track tours will be available at noon for a donation to the event, allowing you to drive your own car on the track. Instructors will also be giving racecar rides for $25 per ride at 10:00, 1:35, 3:00 and 4:30.

 

*To participate in an intructor ride, you must be 16 years of age and wear a helmet, long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe shoes. Sign up in Media Center on second floor to make your donation and sign a waiver.

2011 Accelerating a Cancer Cure Drivers:

Tim Nagy is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at UAB, where he studies the relationships between obesity and disease, especially cancer. When not at work or spending time with his family, you will likely find Tim at the race track. Luckily Barber Motorsports is only a 20-minute drive from his home in Inverness. He founded "Accelerating a  Cancer Cure" to raise money for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and  has been a participating driver from the start. Tim enjoys racing at the club level,  instructing at high-performance driver education events, and directing time trials for NASA-MidSouth.

Eric Hunter is a real estate developer for Jim Wilson & Associates. He began racing motorcycles at age 8, but has recently become interested in racing cars. His wife, a cancer survivor, rides upper level dressage and drives a Porsche Panamera. He is excited to drive a Cure for Cancer in this unique way!
roach_thumb Michael Roach is known around the track as Captain Slow or The Rainman,  racing for "Team Turtle Like the Wind Racing." According to him, he's always in the running for last place but usually able to beat expectations due to breakdowns or crashes involving other competitors.
