UAB: Comprehensive Cancer Center

Give the gift of compassion this holiday season!

By making a gift to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, you will help to make this holiday season a little brighter for our cancer patients who are struggling with their cancer journey. By making a gift of $10 or more to our Patient and Family Services Fund, you will help us provide medications, transportation and lodging for patients.

You can honor a friend or family member with your gift. For your donation, we will send you a set of holiday cards that you can personalize to notify them of your donation.*

Here are just two examples of how your gift could make a difference:

We recently had the opportunity to help a 34-year-old single mother with four sons, ages 13, 7, 6 and 5. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she had to receive weekly chemotherapy treatments for three months, causing her to miss at least one half-day from her job at a local church child development center. This reduced her already stretched paycheck, even with her insurance. Through the Patient and Family Services Committee Fund, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center was able to offer assistance with her insurance co-pays for medications as well as utility bills for a total of $500. This assistance allowed her to care for her family and helped reduce some of the financial stress caused by her reduced hours at work.

Another patient impacted by the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center was a south Alabama woman with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. She and her husband live on less than $1400 per month from Social Security, and she has no health insurance after the textile plant she worked at closed. She had no continuation of health care benefits and received only a small pension – less than $100 per month. When she became jaundiced, her local doctor referred her to UAB for medical treatment, where she received chemotherapy for six weeks and radiation therapy for six more weeks. The Patient and Family Services Committee Fund was used to obtain medications and to provide her with gas cards to help with the multiple trips back and forth to UAB during her chemotherapy treatments. When she started daily radiation treatments, she and her husband were able to stay at Birmingham’s Hope Lodge, greatly reducing their number of trips to and from UAB and easing their burden during a difficult time.
