Your gift to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center helps make a difference by: --Supporting the research of promising young scientists—each with the potential to uncover answers leading to the cure. --Giving hope to triple-negative breast cancer patients by supporting research of a promising new treatment that could save lives and change the standard-of-care for this aggressive and hard-to-treat cancer. --Fostering advancements from the recent discovery of four genetic biomarkers that will help physicians predict which patients are most likely to develop aggressive colorectal cancer. --Providing cancer screenings for underserved populations throughout the Deep South—an effort that is projected to reduce the number of deaths from colon and breast cancers in this group of the population over the next decade.
Kate Brinkley: A Young Survivor's Perspective
Why does your gift matter? In a word: Results! Advancements made in cancer research over the last three decades, at UAB and across the country, are helping to save lives. Here are just a few examples of that progress: --30 years ago, four out of every five breast cancer patients died from the disease. Today, four out of every five breast cancer patients survive. --In 2008, a UAB scientist discovered the first-ever genetic link between obesity and colon cancer risk—a finding that could lead to greater accuracy in testing for the disease. --In 2009, UAB researchers found that a potent drug made from cottonseeds stopped the most lethal form of brain cancer for months at a time in many patients enrolled in a clinical trial. --Providing cancer screenings for underserved populations throughout the Deep South—an effort that is projected to reduce the number of deaths from colon and breast cancers in this group of the population over the next decade.
