Because today's research holds the key to tomorrow's care...and promise for a cure.
--Provides spendable funds to recruit some of the very best and brightest physician-scientists to UAB. --Provides a meaningful naming opportunity for the donor. For example, The David and Mary Smith Distinguished Research Program in Gastrointestinal Oncology at UAB. --Gives UAB scientists the tools to attract significant National Cancer Institute grant funding. --Allows promising research to advance at a much faster pace. --Advances the translation of scientific discoveries into novel therapies and new treatments for patients with cancer.
--Helps draw some of the brightest minds into a specific field of cancer research for life. This is a critical time in determining the direction of their future research. --Helps us keep the most promising residents and fellows, who are often recruited by the best cancer centers in the world, at UAB after their training. --Gives this next generation of scientists the opportunity to be mentored by our senior faculty who are among the very best in the country. --Advances the pace of discovery by allowing senior scientists to have continual and more lines of research going on at any one time. --Gives young investigators an opportunity to test their ideas and gather data that can be used to compete for extramural funding. --Funding a young scientist is cost-effective ($50,000 per year for two to three years) with a possible huge impact. Young investigators are tireless components of the scientific workforce, a great source of innovative ideas and the future of scientific work in seeking the cure for cancer.
Supporting Senior Scientists: --Provides recruitment funding so that UAB can attract some of the most highly regarded and sought-after physician-scientists in the country, and in many cases, the world. --Helps keep successful scientists at UAB where they can fully develop their research protocols and attract major grant funding. --Allows our research faculty to travel to important scientific meetings where they are able to interact with other experts in the field of cancer. --Provides opportunities for our scientists to collaborate with researchers from various disciplines and locations. --Funding a senior scientist at UAB is a small investment to make ($100,000-$250,000 for two to three years) in a future of excellence in cancer care, readily available for all Alabamians.
Giving in support of UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center research provides unique opportunities for the donor. Donors are able to see the impact of their contributions in action as discoveries are made on the cellular level. They are able to meet the researcher their gift is supporting and in many cases tour the lab(s) in which the research is conducted. Donors receive yearly updates about the scientist they have supported, the research that has taken place and any advancements that have been made. |
