How has cancer impacted your life?

My mom is a two-time cancer survivor. She had ovarian cancer at age 35, when I was four years old.  In 2007, she was diagnosed with stage IV throat cancer. Because my parents live in Atmore, they stayed with my husband and me while she underwent treatment at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. My mom says that when she had ovarian cancer, she prayed that God would allow her to live to see me graduate high school. She has now seen me graduate three times, as well as get married. We are very blessed by that and thankful that she is doing well.

Why did you want to join the YSB?

After my mom completed her treatment, I wanted to give back in some way to those at the Cancer Center who had made such an impact on our lives. Having just gone through the experience with my mom, I also felt uniquely compassionate toward the patients and their caregivers.

What is the most enjoyable thing you’ve done as a YSB member?

I have particularly enjoyed the new friendships that I’ve made with other board members. It’s so heartwarming to see everyone help out and serve with a common goal. I also enjoy preparing dinner for the patients and their families at the Hope Lodge and participating in the unit walks.
