The Girl Scouts of Troop 268 from Helena, Alabama, proved that kids can make a difference by holding a rummage sale that raised more than $400 to support the research of young scientists at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. In thanking the girls for their hard work, Uma Borate, M.D., explained that scientists often struggle to find funding for their work early in their careers. Philanthropic support allows young scientists to establish research projects and generate data that makes them more competitive for outside funding sources.
Pictured with Dr. Borate are troop members Olivia Hudson, Samantha Robinson, Abby Traweek, Alyssa Parker, Abrianna Porco and Barrett Holston. Not pictured: Alyssa Scott, Jordan Payne, Kirsten Hughley, Sara Bess Rickard, Alex Chuang, Saigley Sawtelle, Olivia Dufour, Laura Wilson, Lily Hanley, and Sarah Liz Collins. The troop is led by parent volunteers Barbara Traweek, Melissa Porco and Melissa Hudson. |
