UAB: Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Gene Bartow Fund for Cancer Research was established to honor Coach Gene Bartow, the "founding father" of UAB athletics. Beginning in 1977 until his retirement in 2000, Coach Bartow developed an intercollegiate sports program at UAB from infancy into one that today features 18 sports. He also led the UAB Men's Basketball program for 18 seasons, taking the team to 14 postseason appearances, 10 of which were in the NCAA Tournament. In 1997, UAB renamed its basketball venue in his honor.

Coach Bartow was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He was also part of the inaugural class of the UAB Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 - the same year he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. He still ranks in the top 20 winningest NCAA Division I basketball coaches of all time.

The Gene Bartow Fund for Cancer Research, a partnership between the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UAB Athletic Department, was established in 2009 while Coach Bartow was undergoing treatment for stomach cancer. The fund supports high-priority research areas in the Cancer Center where strategic investment is most needed, whether for a specific research project aimed at new treatments and cures, or the recruitment of world-class scientists. All donations to the fund stay at UAB and are directly applied toward accelerating and expanding research.
