Kirby I. Bland, M.D.
Kirby I. Bland, M.D., is Senior Advisor to the Director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Fay Fletcher Kerner Professor and Chair of the UAB Department of Surgery. Dr. Bland served as Deputy Director of the Cancer Center from 2000 until 2009. He is internationally renowned for his contributions to surgical oncology and for his distinguished career as a surgeon, researcher and educator.
Dr. Bland’s principal research interests are currently those related to breast cancer including clinical trials and molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis. He is the principal investigator of the Cancer Center’s $13.9-million SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant in breast cancer from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), as well as the Cancer Center’s T-32 training grant in surgical oncology.
Dr. Bland is currently an active editorial board member of 12 scientific peer-reviewed journals including The Annals of Surgery and Surgery, among others. Since January 2005, he has served as the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Surgery. He is currently on the NCI’s Board of Scientific Advisors and the Clinical Trials Advisory Committee. He is also the current president-elect of the American Surgical Association and First Vice-President of the American College of Surgeons.
Prior to joining the UAB faculty in 1999, Dr. Bland held the J. Murray Beardsley Professor and Chairmanship at Brown University. Before that, he was the clinical director of the University of Florida Cancer Center. Dr. Bland received his B.S. from Auburn University and his M.D. from UAB. He completed his residency in general surgery and a fellowship in immunology at the University of Florida, as well as a surgical oncology fellowship at the M D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
