Cancer Center Marks Signing of Act on Screenings for Breast, Cervical and Colorectal Cancer
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center commemorated the signing of legislation requiring the Alabama Department of Public Health to create breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening programs designed to save the lives of thousands of Alabamians in an event held May 19.
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Pathology have discovered a set of four biomarkers that will help predict which patients are more likely to develop aggressive colorectal cancer and which are not. The findings also shed light on the genetics that result in worse colorectal cancer-treatment outcomes for African-Americans, compared with Caucasians, the researchers said.
Claudia Hardy, a leader in community-based cancer research and cancer prevention at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center, is the 2010 recipient of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Life is a Gift Award presented each year by the organization's North Central Alabama affiliate.
