Partridge Named BBJ Health Care Hero
UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Director Edward Partridge, M.D., a renowned women’s cancer doctor and leader in the fight to reduce racial and ethnic cancer disparities, is the winner of the Birmingham Business Journal’s 2009 Health Care Heroes physician provider award.
“Dr. Ed Partridge was selected for this year’s awards not only because of his work and tremendous achievements at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, but also because of the outreach he has done to help prevent, treat and create awareness of cancer, both in Birmingham and around the state,” BBJ editors wrote in their Oct. 15 announcement.
“We created our Health Care Heroes award program to honor the best and brightest in Birmingham’s talented medical industry. Because of his work as a researcher, a physician and director of the Cancer Center, Dr. Partridge is the embodiment of a true health care hero,” the statement said.
Dr. Partridge is an established medical leader in the state as past president of the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Alabama Society of Clinical Oncology and the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. On the national level he has been chair of the Commission on Cancer for the American College of Surgeons, and he chairs of the board of the Mid South Division of the American Cancer Society and serves on the National Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society.
A graduate of the UAB School of Medicine, Partridge performed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UAB and joined the UAB faculty in 1976 as an instructor. Later he served as director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Partridge was named to the Margaret Cameron Spain Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1999 and became the Comprehensive Cancer Center director in 2007.
