Fiesta Ball

The Young Supporters Board of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted its second annual Cinco de Mayo event, Fiesta Ball 2008, on May 3 at Ted's Garage in downtown Birmingham. This year’s event raised $35,115.

All proceeds raised from the evening will be used to fund a young cancer researcher at UAB. Since cancer scientists must compete for dollars to support their research, it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to receive funding as fewer grants are being awarded on a federal level. This funding crunch is particularly difficult for young scientists who are just starting their careers, as they are competing against more established researchers. The Young Supporters Board hopes that by funding a young investigator, that investment will lead to research and results that will bring in larger federal grants and make an impact on cancer patients in Alabama.

The title sponsor of the event was Harbert Management Corporation. Presenting sponsor was Thompson Tractor Company, Inc., and the event sponsor was Robinson Adams Insurance, Inc.

The Young Supporters Board was established in 2006 and is comprised of Birmingham professionals ages 25 to 34. Their mission is to raise funds and awareness for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only “comprehensive” cancer center as designated by the National Cancer Institute in a five-state region.
