Sporting Clays Classic

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center received $33,960 from the 10th annual Sporting Clays Classic on Friday, April 18. All of the proceeds will be devoted entirely to breast cancer research. Founding sponsors and hosts for the fundraiser, held at Talladega County’s Selwood Farms in Alpine, are B.L. Harbert International, Russo Corporation and Sherman Industries, Inc.

The day-long event was divided into morning and afternoon rounds, with each round having winners announced in two classes: champions and sportsman. The winners for the morning round in the champions class were: first place, Nichols Concrete Equipment, and second place, Kirkpatrick Concrete. In the sportsman class, Joe Piper Inc. received first place and Warrior Tractor won second.

In the afternoon round shooters for McCrory Building Co. were awarded first place in the champions class and McGriff, Siebel & Williams received second. First place in the sportsman class was won by Wade Sand & Gravel. The team for Sherman Industries received second place.

Individual prizes were awarded throughout the day as well. This year’s “top gun” award was given to Pat Popwell, shooting with Nichols Concrete Equipment, who scored 89 out of 100. A half-day quail hunt was awarded to winners of the “Cotton Ball Drop.”

Members of the fundraiser’s organizing committee include: Jackie Stevenson and Will Hereford with B.L. Harbert, Claude Wood with Sherman Industries, Inc., Lance Kitchens with Russo Corporation, Robert Moore with Compass Bank, and Rachel Waters and Katie Stripling with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Over the past 10 years, the Sporting Clays Classic has raised more than $400,000 for breast cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Center is the only such institution in a five-state area to be designated as “comprehensive” by the National Cancer Institute. The ever-growing event has become a tradition for community members wanting to play a role in the fight against the disease.
