Who should submit an abstract
Junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students interested in participating in the research competition and who qualify for one of the award categories (see categories below) are invited to submit abstracts on their cancer research for presentation as a poster.
Cancer researchers not eligible for participation in an award category are encouraged to submit an abstract for presentation as a poster in the Cancer Research - Open Category. This is a non-award category.
The audience for this conference will include UAB and Southern Research faculty, personnel and trainees interested in cancer research.
Please note: Abstracts accepted for poster presentation will be reprinted for distribution in the Retreat Abstract Book. Authors should consider whether sensitive or unpublished findings are appropriate for such distribution.
Preparation and Submission of Abstracts
Abstracts should summarize the proposed content of the material to be presented and must be submitted online by 5:00 pm on Monday, October 1, 2012. The body of the abstract may not exceed 300 words. Text only - no figures
Notification and Review Process
You will receive email notification regarding acceptance of your abstract for poster presentation, along with a poster number assignment, soon after the abstract submission deadline. Posters must be on display in the assigned number location by 9:00 am on meeting day to be evaluated. Judging criteria is based on the following
- Scientific merit
- Presentation and communication skills
- Presenter understanding and participation
Award Categories
Abstracts are submitted for presentation as a poster in one of the following categories:
John R. Durant Awards for Excellence in Cancer Research
First, second and third place awards in each category for Junior Faculty, Postdoctoral Fellows*, and Graduate Students (a total of nine awards)
William C. Bailey Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention and Control Research
One first place award and two honorable mention awards
Tandra Chaudhuri Award for Excellence in Cancer Research
One first place award given to a Postdoctoral Fellow*
Seng-jaw Soong Award for Excellence in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Research
One first place award
Cancer Research Experiences for Students CaRES Award
One first place award given to a student participating in the CaRES Program
* Postdoctoral fellows must be enrolled through the UAB Office of Postdoctoral Education.
Non-Award Category
Cancer Research - Open Category
This non-award category offers the opportunity for cancer researchers to display a poster and discuss their research with meeting participants at the retreat.
Poster Competition Requirements
Poster presenters MUST register to attend the meeting and MUST be available at their posters during designated times for review by the judges.
